Family photos don’t have to feel like a performance.

If the thought of getting everyone dressed, convincing your toddler to smile, and hoping everyone behaves perfectly feels a little overwhelming — you’re not alone.

The truth is, the moments you’ll treasure most years from now probably won’t be the perfectly posed ones. They’ll be the little things you almost forgot happened: the way your kids run into your arms, the way they laugh at silly little things, the cuddles between adventures, and the tiny moments of connection that make your family yours.

As a Sunshine Coast family photographer, my approach is centered around capturing those genuine moments through relaxed, documentary-style photography. My goal isn’t to make your family fit into a photo — it’s to create space for your family to simply be together. You can learn more about my family photography sessions here.

Your children don’t need to be perfect

One of the biggest things parents tell me before a session is, “My kids probably won’t sit still.”

And honestly? That’s exactly what I love.

Children are meant to move, explore, laugh, ask questions and get distracted by interesting things. Those little personalities are what make your family unique.

Instead of asking children to stand still and smile for the camera, I encourage play, movement and connection. We might run along the beach, collect shells, have a cuddle, play a game or simply slow down and enjoy being together.

The result is a gallery filled with images that feel like your family — authentic, joyful and full of life.

What happens during a family photography session?

Every family is different, which means every session looks a little different too.

Some families love the beach and the freedom it brings. Others prefer the comfort of home, where the everyday moments naturally unfold.

Your session might include:

  • chasing waves at sunset
  • exploring a favourite family location
  • playing games together
  • cuddles on the couch
  • reading books with little ones
  • dancing in the kitchen
  • slowing down for quiet moments

These aren’t just photos. They become memories attached to an experience you shared together.

This is what I mean by an experience-led session — creating a moment your family can enjoy, while I document the connection happening naturally.

What should we wear for family photos?

The best outfits are the ones that allow your family to feel comfortable and confident.

I always recommend choosing clothing that feels like you. Soft textures, natural colours and comfortable fabrics photograph beautifully because they allow movement and help keep the focus on your connection.

Think about:

  • earthy or neutral tones
  • layers and textures
  • outfits that allow children to play
  • clothing that reflects your family’s personality

The goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect version of your family. It’s to capture the season of life you’re actually in.

Why choose documentary-style family photography?

Traditional family photos often focus on everyone looking at the camera. While those images can be beautiful, there is something incredibly special about photographs that capture the moments in between.

A documentary approach focuses on:

the way your child reaches for your hand

the laughter that happens when nobody is expecting it

the cuddles you wish you could bottle up forever

the small details that tell the story of this chapter

These are the images that bring you back to how this season felt.

Beautiful family photography locations on the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast offers so many incredible locations for relaxed family photography.

I regularly photograph families around places like Warana Beach and Kawana Beach, where the ocean, sand and natural light create a beautiful backdrop for connection and play.

Whether your family loves the beach, nature, or the comfort of your own home, the best location is always somewhere that allows your family to feel relaxed and present.

Your family is already worth remembering

The little years go by quickly.

The messy moments, the tiny hands, the loud laughs and the sleepy cuddles all become memories before you realise it.

My role as a Sunshine Coast family photographer is to preserve those moments for you — not just how your family looked, but how this season felt.

If you’re looking for relaxed, authentic family photography filled with connection, storytelling and heartfelt memories, I’d love to help you capture your story.
